A psychology instructor at Orange Coast College (OCC) in southern California shared a bold opinion with her human sexuality class by suggesting that Donald Trump’s election is “an act of terrorism,” The College Fix reported.
An anonymous student recorded the teacher and submitted it to the community college’s Republican group, the OCC Republicans, who posted the video on the Internet.
Instructor Olga Perez Stable Cox said in part: “White supremacist and a vice president that is one of the most anti-gay humans in this country. And so we are in for a difficult time, but again I do believe that we can get past that.”
Then Cox offered the following insight: “Our nation is divided, we have been assaulted, it’s an act of terrorism. One of the most frightening things for me and most people in my life is that the people creating the assault are among us."
However, a classmate argued that this statement has been taken out of context by the OCC Republicans.
Sophomore and president of the OCC Republicans, Joshua Martinez, reportedly told The Huffington Post, “The video, shot during a class on human sexuality, was submitted anonymously to us, and we wanted to share it to raise awareness on this issue. We want other students to know that we will help protect them against the constant leftist indoctrination we are experiencing in class by exposing behavior like this.”
Facebook user Kat M Be critiqued Martinez, writing that he distorted the teacher’s message which, she said, was specifically addressing the postelection assaults on the LGBTQ community.
The student who recorded the video faces threats of legal action from a teachers’ union. The smear campaign against Cox and, more generally, liberals, which has been evoked from the publication of the video, certainly warrants some form of retribution. Cox was simply doing her job, which is to educate and spark intellectual discourse among students.
