The community of Fort Myers, Florida is reeling in shock after a 15-year-old girl had sex with multiple boys in a high school bathroom while 25 onlookers watched and even filmed the incident. Yet as most cast shame on the young girl, her mother spoke to a television station to get the facts clear and redeem her daughter’s reputation.
The mother who requested not to be on camera told WBBH that her daughter is a human trafficking victim who was sold into sex slavery at the tender age of 13. Her mother rescued her after being held captive for two years.
"I had heard a lot about the incident through the news. I heard it, and thought there are some red flags," Megan Estrem, founder and CEO of Be The Light, an advocacy group for sex trafficking victims, told WBBH. "What's upsetting about this is this behavior is not uncommon for human trafficking victims."
The teenage girl was only a student at South Fort Myers High School for two weeks before the outrageous act took place. She went to the boys’ bathroom to talk to her crush, but when he asked for sex, she complied.
Yet word got out of her willingness, and soon she was surrounded by 25 boys participating or capturing the event on camera.
"She did not sleep with 25 boys in the bathroom. There was only a handful that she did sleep with. In this case, it was more of a spectator sport," Estrem clarified.
As Estrem explained, the traumatizing experience has made the teenage girl ill-equipped to make rational decisions in those circumstances. While officials investigate the video (that has made numerous rounds on social media), they should consider the boys’ actions regarding consent and the teenage girl’s extreme vulnerability. Although, just as disturbing as this video, the common reaction sways towards a mere slap on the wrist for the perpetrators and a horrendous dose of slut-shaming for the victim.
