A 13-year-old student accidentally killed herself after trying to scare her parents when they grounded her, an inquest heard.

Francesca Cushion was found unconscious in her bedroom after having been grounded for being out late one night. She was later declared dead in a hospital.

Cushion was awaiting an assessment from mental health specialists before her death over concerns she had Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

A pediatrician told the inquest he did not believe Cushion needed urgent help or intended to harm herself.

“She left her family and friends devastated and I don’t think she would have wanted to put us through any of this. We strongly believe it was an accident,” Cushion’s mother, Colleen Nagel, said.

“I think Frankie wanted to scare us and unfortunately it’s gone horribly wrong.”

Nagel mentioned that Cushion had previously tried to scare her family and threatened to run away.

The coroner, Anita Bhardwaj, ruled Cushion’s death an accident.

"It is more likely than not that Frankie's behavior was part of a developmental disability," she said.
