In the weeks following Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s ban of Washington Post reporters from attending his press conferences, the newspaper staff took it upon themselves to have a little fun of their own.
The outcome probably won’t surprise you.
Their investigation has found that Trump, in all probable cause, has been lying through his teeth about his generous donations of $8.5 million over the past 15 years. Either that, or he is so humble, he has been privately giving to charity and hasn’t left a trace.
He isn’t releasing his tax records, so we can’t know for certain. But, as Washington Post learned based on what is on public record, between 2008 and this May, Trump donated to charity once.
He gifted somewhere between $5,000 and $9,999 to the Police Athletic League of New York City, making him one of the least generous billionaires in the contiguous 48 states.
Last month, he gave $1 million to a nonprofit for veterans’ families, but only after the media shamed him for not giving the money he promised.
In the last 15 years, Trump has made donations of about $2.8 million through one of his foundations, but hasn’t done so since 2008. That’s less than a third of what he’s promised to have gifted.
Now that the media has shamed him again, will Trump step up to donate the remaining millions to charity in order to appease his supporters? Or will he claim that the Washington Post – which he has already publicly denounced – are incompetent at doing their job?
