At least 50 people are dead and 700 people are injured after two huge explosions ripped through Tianjin, China on Wednesday night.
The blasts, which were so large they could be seen by satellites in space, happened after midnight at a warehouse for toxic chemicals. Shock waves could be felt six miles away from the site. Officials are still investigating the cause of the disaster but Xinhua news agency said several containers caught fire before the explosion. Industrial accidents are not unusual in economically advanced China.
More than a thousand firefighters responded to the scene, and a dozen were among those killed. Tianjin struggles to recover from the devastation that has rocked this port city of 15 million and has
turned the site into a scene straight out of the apocalypse.
