Wendell Pierce may be best known for playing Detective Bunk on HBO's iconic series, “The Wire,” but it appears he has some strong political affiliations as well—Pierce was arrested on Saturday after getting into an altercation with a Bernie Sanders supporter.
Pierce, an outspoken Hillary Clinton proponent, allegedly partook in an intense political discussion with a couple outside Lowes Hotel in Atlanta.
When the woman he was speaking with declared her support for Sanders, Pierce “pushed the boyfriend and went after the woman, grabbing her hair and smacking her in the head,” according to WSBTV.
Pierce was arrested and posted $1,000 bail before being released.
According to a police spokesperson, no other details from the incident were revealed: “The incident did not rise to anything significant so no special notification was made. It was treated like any other arrest a patrol officer conducts. Mr. Pierce made no indication he was famous nor did the officer inquire.”
The ideological disparity between Clinton and Sanders supporters has become increasingly apparent over the past few months—a large chunk of Sanders supporters are unwilling to unify behind the former secretary of state, while Clinton’s advocates continue to be frustrated that Sanders is unwilling to drop out.
Pierce’s violence is inexcusable, but epitomizes the tense political climate many are currently experiencing.
