A Brazilian tattoo artist specializes in helping victims of domestic abuse heal by offering free tattoos to cover their scars.
As the saying goes, "Our scars remind us that the past was real," but when memories of the past take you back to years of
, it's beneficial to forget.
One Brazilian tattoo artist is helping women do just that by covering domestic violence survivors' physical scars with tattoos.
offers the tattoos for free to women who have endured physical abuse or
mastectomies turning their unsightly scars into beautiful works of art.
Carvalho has named the project, "A Pele da Flor" which translates to "The Skin of the Flower."
It all started a couple of years ago when a friend went to her to cover a scar she got from a man who stabbed her with a switchblade after she rejected him at a nightclub.
"I was suddenly struck by the idea of providing free tattoos to women who were left with scars following domestic violence or mastectomies," Carvalho reportedly said. "Each tattoo would act as an instrument for empowerment and a self-esteem booster."
"It is wonderful to see how survivors' relationship with their bodies changes after they get the tattoos," said Carvalho. "I follow many of them on Facebook and I see how, after being ashamed of their scarred bodies, they now post pictures in dresses, and they look happy, changed. It is transformative."
