Turkish police officers stand guard at the scene where a bomb explosion took place.

According to the Turkish Ekhlas news agency, Turkey’s gendarmerie forces on Thursday exploded hundreds of unused hand grenades and munitions near Sivas to clear out munitions left behind from a military maneuver, without primarily acquiring information on weather conditions.

Strong winds picked the hazardous gases and pollutants, and spread them throughout areas near the city, leaving many vulnerable to contamination.

More than a dozen locals have been hospitalized after inhaling the poisonous gases, prompting the Turkish police forces to hand out masks to residents.
