"The Daily Show" welcomed DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz as a guest Monday night and host Trevor Noah took the opportunity to address concerns that Sen. Bernie Sanders is being “co**blocked” by the convention.
Of course, Wasserman Schultz immediately rejected the notion that the DNC is blocking Sanders by offering a very neutral, politically correct response: “You know, as powerful as that makes me feel, I’m not doing a very good job of rigging the outcome or... blocking anyone from being able to get their message out,” she said.
When Noah questioned the idea of “superdelegates” and how that process seems to contradict the concept of democracy — which is supposed to allow voters the most power — Wasserman Schultz defended the process and attempted to reassure Noah and his viewers that voters do determine the ultimate outcome.
Despite the fact that we’ve seen Sanders and Hillary Clinton go after each other pretty rigorously, Wasserman Schultz denounced that there is any real nastiness or animosity between the democratic candidates, claiming that the media is creating the “drama” and “at the end of the day, we are going to come together.”
She went on to sink her teeth into the Republican Party, turning the attention away from the Democrats’ shortcomings.
“You’ll watch the chaos unfold on the other side where they are about to splinter into I don’t know how many parts,” she said, “because they have alienated and done everything they can to make people in this country feel unwelcome, the vitriol and bigotry and nastiness that not only Donald Trump is engaged in but they have all piled onto and promoted, and gone out of their way to embrace.”
Wasserman Schultz certainly wasn’t candid in her interview with Noah; her poised and respectable responses were digestible but not quite believable.
While the DNC can be considered lucky that they aren’t living the nightmare that the Republicans are enduring, it is evident that things aren’t as peachy-keen as she made them seem.
