A man’s attempt to bring the ashes of his grandfather home to Indianapolis ended with an angry scene at the Orlando Airport resulting in the scattering of ashes on the terminal floor. John Gross, of Indianapolis had to suffer humiliation and distress at the hands of airport security agent when she insisted on opening a jar that contained his grandfather’s remains.
While checking the jar she accidently dropped it on the floor spilling ashes on the terminal. The tightly sealed jar which clearly read ‘Human Remains’ had the remains of Mario Mark Marcaletti, the 91-year-old who died in 2002 and his remains were divided among his family members.
According to John, he very clearly informed the security agent about the remains of his grandpa that were in the jar and advised her to be careful with it. ‘She picked up the jar. She opened it up. ‘She used her finger and was sifting through it. And then she accidentally spilled it.’ As the contents fell on the floor, John frantically tried to gather it because of a line of passengers waiting behind him.
John complained that instead of apologizing to him, the security agent began to laugh at him. Something he found extremely offending. Gross later found out that TSA is not allowed to tamper with human remain containers under any circumstances.
Although, nothing can be done to regain the ashes, Gross wants an apology from the TSA and from the security agent who violated the rules by opening the jar and then laughed at him after spilling them.
