The Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that a Tunisian-American citizen, two-year old Zeina Aouani who was born in the central Tunisian city of Gafsa, was among the victims of the Villagio mall fire in Doha, Qatar.
Original reports of Aouani’s death considered her an American citizen but according to Tunisian radio station ShemsFM, her father recently went to the Tunisian Embassy in Doha to report that his daughter held duel Tunisian and American citizenship.
The May 28th Villagio Mall fire killed 17 civilians– 13 children and four teachers trapped in a daycare center. The fire also killed two members of the Qatar Civil Defense forces. It is widely believed that the fire started near the daycare center on the second floor.
AP has reported that the owner of the luxury mall as well as the owner of the daycare center and three other mall officials have been arrested in the Qatari government’s ongoing investigation into possible safety lapses that occurred.The report adds that the sprinkler systems malfunctioned and firefighters struggled with mall blueprints as the blaze ravaged the mall.
According to the Qatar News Agency the Qatari Civil Defense Forces controlled a second smaller fire that erupted at the Qatar Aeronautical College which did not cause any injuries or casualties.
