While many lawmakers have been hesitant to fully speak out against GOP nominee Donald Trump, one Texas congressman was refreshingly unsubtle in his critique of Trump.
Filemon Vela, a Democratic representative from Texas, wrote a scathing open letter addressed to Trump, calling out his vile racism and xenophobia, particularly toward the Mexican community, as the Texas Tribune reports.
Vela, a lawmaker of Mexican heritage, represents a congressional district in Texas that borders Mexico and is home to many Mexican immigrants.
He ripped Trump apart for even conceiving the idea of a wall between Mexico and the U.S.: “Why any modern-thinking person would ever believe [in] building a wall along the border of a neighboring country, which is both our ally and one of our largest trading partners, is frankly astounding and asinine.”
He did not put his thoughts politely, writing, “Mr. Trump, you’re a racist and you can take your border wall and shove it up your a**.”
Many other politicians, including prominent Democrats such as Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, have been reluctant to unequivocally classify Trump as a racist and danced around that language; Vela clearly had no such qualms.
He also anticipated Trump’s response and reacted accordingly—knowing Trump would simply call him a biased because he is Mexican (as Trump did with the judge handling the Trump University case), Vela schooled him on his ancestral history: “Before you dismiss me as just another 'Mexican,' let me point out that my great-great grandfather came to this country in 1857, well before your own grandfather.”
He further noted that his grandfather and father served in World War I and World War II, respectively.
Vela’s letter is the perfect response to Trump—all media figures and politicians who have been treating him with kids’ gloves need to reevaluate their strategy. Trump deserves this harsh, unfettered criticism for the abhorrent ideas he spews.
