You get an extremely eerie feeling while watching this video. It is almost like a scene from a bad action movie where the villain is out to kill not only without remorse but almost with a feeling of glee.
The footage is from a US helicopter hovering over a city in Afghanistan, zoning down on a moving target. As the target locks in, the pilot sings, ‘Bye Bye Ms American Pie’ as he pushes the button that explodes the target to smithereens.
It is about this time that the fact that you have just seen a man being blown away hits you really hard. You feel rage and disgust for the soldier, until you realize that for him, the target was just that, a moving target. It didn’t have a name, a face, a personality. If anything, he represented the enemy who ever that may be in this case.
It may seem shocking and unbelievable that someone can kill a human being so ruthlessly. But you have to realize that once someone kills again and again and again, the targets become just that, targets. Not human beings. The feeling of doing your duty, which in this case is eliminating the enemy, overshadows the feeling of fear, remorse and guilt.
It happens with cops and doctors as well. It is just part of the job.
