The video shows startling footage from the North Pole where a lake has formed. Clearly this is a sign of global warming.
No one can claim not being warned, scientists have been telling us for several years that this may be the result of all the increased temperatures. The north pole saw temperatures two to five degrees warmer than average this year.
This has unfortunately become an annual occurrence. This year, the lake started to form on July 13 and has come to stretch a significant distance. The water is likely to get worse over the coming week, as an expected Arctic cyclone's strong winds and rain will loosen the ice coverage even further.
Since 1979 the Arctic region has been extensively monitored by satellites. They detect e.g. the ice surface area, the extent of the area covered with ice and also the total amount or volume of ice. The results of these observations are startling. In 2012 the September average ice extent dipped below 4 million km², which is about half of what it was in 1979.
