Just a few more weeks to go until the Election Day, both Democrats and Republicans are trying hard to get the public to sway to their corner and vote for their choice candidate. But Virginia Republican Party has adopted an offensive approach of campaigning against President Obama by posting racial images on the GOP’s Facebook page. The images portray the president as a caveman, a thug and a witchdoctor among other things.
The altered photos have been posted by Mecklenburg County GOP chair Wally Hudson who is ready to defend the imagery and has also refused to take the images down despite a request by the state GOP.
“If they don't want to see it, they don't have to look at it. We don't consider any of it racist... It's freedom of speech.”
In one shot in which Obama is caricatured with hair like a caveman, the caption reads: “Tanking the economy is so easy a caveman can do it.”
In another image, the president is shown with a sneer, wears a wife-beater T-shirt, carries a bouquet of flowers on his face under the headline, “Baby Gimme One More Chance.” “No Job, No Gas, No House, No Food, No Problem.”
Apart from the offensive nature of these images it is commendable to see some responsible Republicans condemning the act. According to the Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, Pat Mullins, “They are offensive, tasteless and should never have been posted anywhere, let alone a local unit’s Facebook page. The Republican Party of Virginia condemns this sort of imagery in the strongest possible terms.”
Nonetheless, by engaging in such offensive and indecent activities Republicans will erode any leftover credibility that they have with the American voter. Democrats should actually be happy that Republicans are providing them an open opportunity to gain votes on sympathetic grounds.
