Former Secretary of State Warren Christopher died Friday from complications of kidney and bladder cancer, his family said.
He was 85.
Christopher was the secretary of state for President Bill Clinton. He served from 1993 to 1997, according to a biography by his law firm.
Before that, he served as the deputy secretary of state for President Jimmy Carter.
In 1981, Carter awarded Christopher with the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award.
Christopher received the award for his role in the release of 52 American hostages in Iran.
