Dunkin’ Donuts is under fire ever since its Thailand franchise released an advertisement for a new product called Charcoal Snowblack.
The controversially racist spot that has sparked outrage shows a woman eating a chocolate donut which causes her skin color to go from fair to dark. You can watch the complete ad in the video below:
Deputy Asia Director for Human Rights Watch Phil Robertson also criticized the advertisement, calling the ad offensive and demanded an apology Dunkin’ Donuts.
And it worked. The donut company apologized for the spot in a tweet posted by the American division. It said that they intended to immediately pull the ad:
@UOENOThough We are working with our Thailand franchisee to immediately pull the ad. DD recognizes the insensitivity of this spot.— Dunkin' Donuts (@DunkinDonuts) August 30, 2013
This is the second time this year that Dunkin’ Donuts has been associated with racism. In June, a disturbingly racist video emerged on the Internet in which a Florida woman filmed herself screaming out insults at a Dunkin’ cashier when her meal was not re-funded immediately upon request.
The video went viral and eventually the employee was compensated and awarded by the company.
Here are four more ads from this year which were blasted for containing racist elements.
Coca-Cola Super Bowl Ad:
Arab-American groups criticized a Coca-Cola Super Bowl adin January depicting an Arab walking through the desert with a camel. The spot was questioned for its stereotypical portrayal of the Arab community.
Volkswagen Super Bowl Ad:
Another Super Bowl spot which received backlash was Volkswagen’s. They chose a white man, apparently from Minnesota in the ad, to speak in a Jamaican accent which was the point criticized by experts saying ‘culture is the punch line of the advertisement.’
In April, Cheerios released a controversial ad implying that a white lady and a black man got together and made a cute interracial child.
Mountain Dew Spot:
Mountain Dew released a racist commercial in May depicting criminals belonging to a particular race and color.
