Carbonated TV got in touch with Didem Collinsworth, Turkey Analyst for the International Crisis Group who told us what exactly was happening on the Turkish home ground.
We asked Didem what has been the role of media during the Turkish protests?
Peaceful demonstrations at Turkey’s Taksim Square to protect a park from being redeveloped on May 28th turned into the most hideous riots. A violent mass of riot police armed with batons, water cannons and tear gas tried breaking up the protests. Protesters fought back with fireworks, stones, and petrol bombs. What took shape then was one of the worst riots and acts of brutality in recent history.
The protests quickly turned from just about safeguarding the park to asking for Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s resignation.
Amnesty International released a report following the protests citing more than a thousand protesters had been injured and at least three had died.
