Woman Calls Latino Family ‘Wetback,’ Tells Them To ‘Speak English’

A woman who accidentally left a dog in the car was coming to check up on her pet, when she encountered passersby who bombarded her with racial slurs.

Facebook user Wendy Flores shared a video of a group of white people ranting against her family at a parking lot in Grand Junction, Colorado — and then came up for the perfect response for all such racists.

Flores’ mother, Yolanda, was visiting Mesa County Health Department with her 6-year-old granddaughter and 14-year-old son, Ahmed, so he could get a checkup for his high school football team.

They left the family dog inside the car with window rolled up, which can be quite dangerous as temperatures can rise more quickly than anticipated. However, the Flores soon realized their mistake and were coming to check up on the dog, when they saw a group of people standing beside the car.

When the woman wearing a blue-and-white patterned blouse saw the family approaching the car, she immediately launched into a racial tirade rather than show concern for the animal inside the hot car.

“You're the ones that give brown people a bad name,” yelled the woman, now identified as Laura Bennett. “You just want to f****** get something for nothing. Get you’re a** a job if you don't have one,” Bennett added, referring to offensive stereotypes about  the Latino community.

Even if, for argument’s sake, one considers that Bennett was concerned over the dog’s well-being, turning to racial slurs in the heat of the moment is never excusable or acceptable.

“This right here is what’s wrong with the world. People acting out of spite and hate towards a different race. Judging someone without knowing them, wrote Flores in her Facebook post.

White Women

Flores explained that her mother, who was being insulted by Bennett, is actually a legal immigrant and her father was a hard worker at an oil rig, who was able to provide his children with a privileged life.

Although her parents’ English was not perfect, they could understand each and every one of the hurtful slurs sent to them by the woman.

Flores also said her mother was flabbergasted and unable to respond appropriately at the moment because the vicious encounter had terribly frightened her young granddaughter, who was crying hysterically in the car.

“These women are a disgrace to humanity over all. America is a diverse country. And that's what makes it such a wonderful place to be a part of. We are all human beings trying to survive. Remember that next time you are trying to bring yourself up by putting someone down,” Flores concluded with well-placed advice for all prejudiced people.

Flores said she never wanted to experience the humiliating exchange ever again and said what hurts her the most was that her young children had to watch the ugly encounter.

After the video went viral, Flores said she feared retribution and was not certain she wanted to stay at Grand Junction any longer. But she also wished no harm comes Bennett and said her intention was only to stop such racist prejudiced against other members of her community.

Bennett, meanwhile, came forward and confirmed she was the verbal attacker in the video. She tried to defend her actions by framing it about the dog.

"I don't regret helping the animal," Bennett said. "My only regret is the language I used and my approach."

That's not good enough, Flores said.

"I saw the effect it took on my family," Flores explained.

Pro-immigration activists who saw the video said incidents like these are proof that discrimination is on the rise and the footage gives the community an opportunity to find out solutions to these type of behavior.

“It’s horrible,” Hispanic Affairs Project Executive Director Ricardo Perez said in response to the video. But he also congratulated Flores by handling the situation well under the circumstances and not causing it to escalate. “I think she is having a very good attitude and she is not responding to the way that this lady is yelling.”
