PHILADELPHIA -- The winter storm plaguing the Northeast has disrupted air and road travel across the region as people try to get to work. Crews are working Friday to clear roads where snow begins drifting as soon as it hits the ground in high winds. Public transportation is bogged down, too. New Jersey Transit buses that take workers to New York are not operating in northern New Jersey. Some rail service is also suspended or delayed in New Jersey and on New York's Long Island. Roads covered by drifting snow are closed from the Philadelphia suburbs to the Poconos region, an hour or more away. Speed restrictions are in effect on several interstate highways. Hundreds of flights were canceled Thursday in anticipation of the storm, which hit the area in earnest overnight.
