Even though a North Carolina woman faces jail time for mistreatment of her dog, she still gets to keep her.

After an internet-wide manhunt, a North Carolina woman has been found and charged with animal cruelty for posting a photo on Facebook of her dog’s snout duct taped shut.

Katharine F. Lemansky — under the pseudonym “Katie Brown” — posted the photo last Friday of Brown, the dog, with the caption, “This is what happens when you don’t shut up!!!”

The internet did not respond well to the photo. Photoshopped images and “WANTED” posters began circulating throughout the weekend in an effort to find Lemanksy and have her arrested for such an inhumane discipline tactic.

There was even a petition created on Change.org calling for her arrest that had almost 40,000 signatures by Monday night.

She has since been found and charged with one Misdemeanor Cruelty to Animals and faces 150 days in jail.

Lemansky hasn’t spoken publicly about the situation since her arrest, but she did try to calm folks down after receiving backlash for the photo by posting, "Don’t panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasn’t barked since... POINT MADE!!!"

The strange part about this whole situation is that despite being charged with animal cruelty, Lemansky gets to keep her dogs.

“Taping the dog’s muzzle shut was a terrible decision on Ms. Lemansky’s part, and charging her with animal cruelty under North Carolina law was the right thing to do,” said Cary Police Captain Randall Rhyne, according to a news release posted on the town's website.

“At the same time, it’s important to also note that our animal control officers who physically examined both Brown and her littermate found the dogs to be very well cared for, which is why we did not and could not remove them from the owner," he added. "The dogs are current on their shots, spayed, and microchipped. They are clean and well-nourished and appear to be comfortable in their surroundings. And there were no signs of injury to Brown’s muzzle, not even detectable hair loss.”

Despite the police statement, people are unsatisfied with the decision to keep Lemansky’s dogs in her care.

"If I lived near her I'd take it myself just wish someone that lives nearby can go and snatch that dog," one reportedly wrote. "Why aren't the animals she has being taken away from her?? Completely ridiculous. She will do this again," said another.

After seeing your face plastered all over the internet, being called all kinds of names and getting arrested, it would be hard to believe that a sane person would ever do something like this again. But, she may just continue her ways and refrain from posting it next time ... Scary thought.
