Quitting smoking is hard. People take all sorts of drastic measures: go cold turkey, take up running, give their cigarettes to a friend to be meted out at specific intervals, punch a cop to go to jail to cut off cigarette access.

Quitting smoking is hard. People take all sorts of drastic measures: go cold turkey, take up running, give their cigarettes to a friend to be meted out at specific intervals, punch a cop to go to jail to cut off cigarette access.

Yes, that happened: a woman hit a police officer to get herself thrown in jail as a plan to quit smoking. Etta Mae Lopez, 31, waited at Sacramento County's main jail for a uniformed officer, and when she saw Sheriff's Deputy Matt Campoy, she walked up to him and smacked him in the face. Campoy, who had thought his shift was over, pulled Lopez into the jail, where she smacked his arm.

"She waited all day for a deputy to come out because she knew if she assaulted a deputy she would go to jail and be inside long enough to quit her smoking habit," Campoy told The Sacramento Bee.

Lopez pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of battering a peace officer and will spend 63 days in jail plus an extra 5 days for violating her probation on a 2011 drunken driving charge. Hopefully that is enough time for the nicotine cravings to ease.

Campoy, for his part, seems to be amused by the whole thing:

"I stepped to the left again and she suddenly stepped into me and slapped my face," he said. "I've been telling everybody that I have a new Irish name: Nick O'Derm."

Perhaps this will work, but if the movies have taught me anything, cigarettes are a defacto currency in jails.
