Toronto Blue Jays' Jose Bautista, left, slides home past New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin during the sixth inning of the baseball game Monday, July 16, 2012 at Yankee Stadium in New York.

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost slugger Jose Bautista for at least 15 days after placing him on the disabled list Tuesday with inflammation in his left wrist.

Their top outfield prospect, Anthony Gose, has been called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Bautista’s spot on the roster.

Losing Bautista for any length of time will be a severe blow to the Blue Jays’ playoff chances, which were remote to begin with, given the injury epidemic that has struck their pitching staff this season.

Bautista is the Blue Jays’ leader, on and off the field. He had started every game, played solid and occasionally outstanding defence in right field and continued his reign as one of the top sluggers in the major leagues with 27 homers, 57 RBIs and an .894 on-base plus slugging percentage.
