Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant was arrested Monday on suspicion of hitting his mother in the face and arms and pushing her in the chest during an argument.
He faces misdemeanor charges of family violence that could result in up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
Angela Bryant called 911 Saturday to report that her son was assaulting her, police in DeSoto, Texas, said. According to Capt. Ron Smith, she had a swollen wrist and thumb, as well as bruising on her upper arms. She told police that her son forcefully knocked her arms away after she grabbed his shirt.
Police say Bryant also hit his mother on the face and pushed her in the chest.
“I don't know what the exact start-up was, what caused everything,” Smith said. “I just know that his mother got involved and got injured.”
Bryant, 23, turned himself in Monday after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest. He was released a few hours later without talking to detectives. His attorney, Royce West, says Bryant posted $1,500 bond.
Smith said the police will send their case to Dallas prosecutors later this week.
