Thomas Bach was elected president of the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday.

The German becomes only the ninth president in the body's 119-year history.

Bach succeeded Belgium's Jacques Rogge who stepped down after 12 years at the helm of the body.

He was a firm favourite in a choice of six candidates, and secured victory in the second round of voting.

Bach polled 49 of the available 93 votes, beating Puerto Rican Richard Carrion into second place on 29 votes.
