Jacques Martin has been fired as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, the National Hockey League team said on Saturday.
Martin, winner of the Jack Adams trophy as coach of the year in 1999 with the Ottawa Senators, paid the price for the Canadiens' sluggish start to the season.
They are bottom of the Northeast division with a record of 13-12-7, although they trail the second-placed Buffalo Sabres by just two points and are also two points out of a playoff spot.
Assistant coach Randy Cunneyworth has been named interim head coach until the end of the season.
