Reports have surfaced that former NBA star Lamar Odom caused a major disturbance on a Delta Airlines flight on Monday while incredibly intoxicated.
Before boarding a flight set to travel from Los Angeles to Manhattan, Odom was seen drinking whiskey and downing countless beers at the Delta lounge.
After being seated on the plane, he rushed out of his seat and vomited in the kitchen area and then went into the lavatory where he continued vomiting with the door open.
He was escorted off the plane as a janitorial crew was sent to clean-up his disgusting mess, only to reappear just 10 minutes later in an attempt to still make the flight.
He was absolutely not in any condition to fly, as he got sick again and returned to the bathroom. He was eventually removed from the plane for good, but the entire incident delayed the flight which arrived in New York 40 minutes late.
Witnesses of the ordeal reported it to TMZ which first broke the story early Tuesday.
Odom has been battling substance abuse for several years now, which has been rumored to be one of the main reasons for his split from Khloé Kardashian.
Now that his struggle has become more public, it seems there is very little hope for his recovery.
The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year comes from a tumultuous past — an underdog in every sense of the word. His mother passed away from cancer when he was just 12 years old and his father was a heroin addict who was absent much of his life.
He rose above his unfortunate circumstances and used his athletic talents to become a beloved and respected professional basketball player, which afforded him a lavish lifestyle that many young boys dream of.
But, watching his current downward spiral play out indicates that none of this was enough to heal whatever inner-demons he is battling.
His fairytale underdog story has quickly become a sorrowful tragedy that he just can’t seem to come back from.
Last October, Odom faced a near-death experience when he suffered a drug overdose and was found unconscious in a Las Vegas brothel.
He was in a coma for four days and was kept in the hospital for three months before his health improved enough to be released.
Ideally, one would view such a scary experience as a “second chance” at life and use it as motivation to turn their life around, which it seemed like Odom was doing.
However, this Delta Airlines incident shows that he has clearly regressed and is succumbing to his addiction.
While Odom isn’t the first celebrity we’ve seen take a wrong turn — Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan to name a couple — he is one of very few who publicly faced death, survived, and still can’t seem to find the light at the end of the tunnel.
What’s worse is that the very people who worshipped him on the court are the ones making a joke of his situation now — turning him into a meme and laughing at his expense.
According to New York Daily News, a passenger on the plane who witnessed Odom’s drunken stupor said to a flight attendant, “Don't you know his history? I don't want a dead body at 30,000 feet."
While the concern may be valid, the person’s comments were completely insensitive, which serves as an example of how we treat those who have fallen from grace.
Hopefully, Odom will soon triumph over these circumstances as he did with his adverse childhood.
