WEMBLEY, England (AP) — Manchester United beat Manchester City 3-2 in injury time in the Community Shield on Sunday, rallying behind Nani's two goals in the traditional opener to the English soccer season.
United, the Premier League champion, trailed 2-0 after goals by Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko despite dominating possession. United got back in the game when Chris Smalling tapped in Ashley Young's 52nd-minute free kick. Seven minutes later, Nani lifted the ball over goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Before a Wembley crowd of 77,169, City seemed happy to settle for a penalty-kick shootout until Nani struck again. United cleared a corner kick to midfield and Kompany, the City captain, was beaten by Nani. With the United fans roaring, the Portuguese winger outran his opponent, dodged to the left around Hart and hit the winner.
Lescott was perhaps City's best player in a game littered with yellow cards and rash tackles. He blocked a close shot by Smalling on the line and deflected a free kick by Nani past the post before he headed in David Silva's free kick in the 38th minute.
AMSTERDAM (AP) — Serbian striker Miralem Sulejmani scored twice to send defending champion Ajax to a 4-1 victory at De Graafschap in the opening round of the Dutch league.
De Graafschap took an early lead on a header by Ted van de Pavert, but Ajax tied it when Sulejmani scored from in close after the goalkeeper dropped the ball.
Sulejmani also began an attack that was completed by Derk Boerrigter to put Ajax ahead in the first game under coach Frank de Boer. Sulejmani scored later on a counterattack, and Theo Janssen made it 4-1 from a free kick.
AZ Alkmaar beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 on Saturday.
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Anthony Stokes scored to give Celtic a 1-0 win at Aberdeen and second place in the Scottish Premier League.
The striker exchanged passes with midfielder Kris Commons in the 74th minute and hit a low shot past goalkeeper David Gonzalez at the near post.
The victory gave Celtic a maximum six points from two games, two ahead of fierce Glasgow rival and defending champion Rangers.
Motherwell leads by a point after a 1-0 win over visiting Hearts in Sunday's other game, but has played one game more than both the Glasgow powers.
