College football prospect Michael Sam is all set to become the first openly gay athlete to play in the National Football League – unless the Packers QB Aaron Rodgers decides to do something about it – after he came out from the closet earlier today.
While Sam’s former Missouri teammates have been supportive of his alternative lifestyle, and he has also received words of encouragement from many others, we all know there still is a large faction that isn’t going to be too crazy with his disclosure.
For instance, Sports Illustrated managed to find an NFL player’s personnel assistant who opposed the idea. The anonymous source didn’t give up his name for obvious reasons, but he did say: “I don't think football is ready for it just yet. In the coming decade or two, it's going to be acceptable, but at this point in time it's still a man's man game. To call somebody a [gay slur] is still so commonplace. It'd chemically imbalance an NFL locker room and meeting room."
Of course, the anti-Michael Sam tweets aren’t all anti-gay tweets. Some have an agenda with the fact that he chose to reveal his sexual orientation so close to the NFL draft. Based solely on his football abilities, he was expected to be drafted somewhere in the third round, but now there is an outside chance that some team might pick him even higher with the intent of making a political statement. However, they said the same thing when Jason Collins came out last year, and no NBA team took a chance on him.
Anyway, let’s check out what the haters are saying on Twitter:
