The New York Yankees announced on Wednesday they had re-signed manager Joe Girardi to a four-year contract, ending weeks of speculation that he may be about to leave the team.

The Yankees released a statement confirming the 48-year-old Girardi would remain in charge of the franchise through to the end of the 2017 season.

Girardi has already been manager of the Yankees for six seasons, steering the Bronx Bombers to a record 27th World Series Championship in 2009.

The Yankees failed to reach the playoffs this season after a year plagued with injuries to key players, prompting speculation Girardi could accept an offer to join the Chicago Cubs.
