National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver handed down one of the stiffest penalties is professional sports history Tuesday, banning Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling from the NBA for life and fining him $2.5 million. He said he will also begin the process of attempting to take the team ownership away from Sterling.
The penalty was prompted by Sterling's comments to a former girlfriend about African-Americans, which was taped and released over the weekend. On the recording, Sterling tells his girlfriend that he didn't want her to associate with African-Americans in public and to not bring African-Americans to his games.
Silver received almost universal support for his disciplinary decision. Basketball commentators and current and former players took to Twitter to rally behind Silver.
