Man, oh man! It just keeps getting weirder and weirder in sports.
The incident waiting to tickle your fancy this time has a referee elbowing a player and breaking his nose.
Yep, you read that right. In a Dutch amateur league football match between Barendrecht and Scheveningen, midfielder Mitchell van Gastel was floored by referee Wim Bronsvoort – the man who was supposed to protect players from such violent incidents.
Result? As per Dutch news agency Omroep West, van Gastel's nose broke and the poor chap had to be stretchered off the field for medical treatment.
On the ref's part, the incident was accidental and he probably didn't mean to fracture van Gastel's schnoz like that. Or maybe it was retaliation against the amount of abuse referees and match officials have taken from both the players as well as fans over the years. Theirs is a thankless job, and often leaves them at the receiving end of widespread ridicule. Who remembers this?
Anyway, a fitting conclusion would've been the ref showing himself the red card and leaving the field. But unfortunately, the unjust world we live in doesn't work like that.
