River Plate won 2-1 at Godoy Cruz in the Argentine League in Mendoza on Sunday.
The visitors took the lead with a Manuel Lanzini penalty after 32 minutes, but Godoy equalized three minutes later through Fecundo Castillon, following a lovely pass from David Ramires.
River Plate regained the lead nine minutes after the break through Eder Balanta, following a free-kick.
River Plate held on for the win despite losing striker Carlos Luna, red carded for an off-the-ball incident just before the end. The win moves the Buenos Aires side to within two points of league leaders Newells Old Boys.
There was controversy in Boca Juniors' goalless draw with Belgrano in Buenos Aires, when the referee Juan Pablo Pompei disallowed a "goal" after only two minutes. Nicolas Blandi appeared to have scored from the rebound after a free-kick by Juan Roman Riquelme bounced off the crossbar. Replays appeared to show the ball had crossed the line before Juan Martinez made the clearance.
The draw, which sees Boca going nine league matches without a win, leaves Boca 17th in the 20-team league.
