This Amazing Footballer Is An Even Better Human Being

Not all sport stars are despicable human beings. In football, foreign players are often compared to mercenaries whose sole interests lie in money in exchange for their skills.

Over the years there have been numerous examples of sports stars showing no emotional attachment to their club or fans, and basically biding their time until someone else with a bigger pay check come along.

But Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk's Croatian captain, Darijo Srna, is an exception to this norm.

The city of Donetsk has been the hub of armed conflicts for the past seven months, forcing Shakhtar to move out from the region and base their operations in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. With 1,200 miles between them and their fans, it would be so easy to forget what’s on the other side.

Srna, however, reminded the fans that he is thinking of them with most touching gesture. He sent 20 tons of Croatian tangerines to Donetsk for schoolchildren whose families haven't been able to find a way out of the war-infested city.

"The captain of Shakhtar [Srna] has repeatedly said this: For all 11 years he's played in Donetsk, he constantly feels the support of the fans," a message on the official Shakhtar Donetsk website reads. "Now, the time has come for Darijo to support the Donetsk citizens himself, making his contribution to the Let's Help Children project carried out by the Humanitarian Centre of Rinat Akhmetov. For the children who have found themselves in the war-zone, Srna bought 20 tons of tangerines in Croatia and covered the delivery costs (to Donetsk).

"The lorries carrying the fruit bought in Darijo's hometown, Metkovic, have already arrived in Donetsk. On Nov. 11 students in Budyonovskyi and Proletarskyi districts started receiving the present from the captain of Shakhtar. Until the end of the week, the sets of tangerines will be delivered to schools across the city. The gifts from Srna will be received by 23,143 primary school students."

In an in interview with the club's TV channel, he said that the fruit delivery is his way of thanking the fans for more than a decade of unconditional support.

At 32, Srna may not be the marauding right-back he once was, but he is still at the top when it comes to being an awesome human being.
