More than 100 spectators were reportedly injured in India after a soccer stadium gallery collapsed in the southern city of Kerala during the opening ceremony of a match. The casualties were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals.
The unfortunate incident took place on the day of the inauguration of the stadium, according to news sources. The match between two local teams, Saban Kottakkal and Mohammadans Mouval, was the first at the Bekal Sports Club.
Though the stadium was new, the stand, made of wooden planks and iron rods, had weakened over the past few months due to heavy rains. More than 1,500 people were present at the venue at the time of the collapse.
The police have filed a case against the organizers of the event, the Bekal Brothers, and others responsible for the construction of the stadium. As for the soccer tournament, much to the teams’ dismay, it has been postponed indefinitely.
