If you are an iPhone 5s owner, get ready for a classic bittersweet feeling.
Apparently, Apple's flagship smartphone has some mysterious abilities that allow it to keep powering your phone long after its battery's bar hits zero.
The revelation come via a Reddit user named Glarznak – who claims that one of the tracking apps he has on his iPhone, kept on recording data for four days even though his battery was completely drained and the phone was dead during that time.
The story of this Redditor in his own words goes something like this:
"While traveling abroad, my iPhone cable stopped working so my 5s died completely. I frequently use Argus to track my steps (highly recommended if you have any health bands or accessories) since it takes advantage of the M7 chip built into the phone.
"Once I got back from my vacation and charged the phone, I was surprised to see that Argus displayed a number of steps for the 4 days that my phone was dead. I'm both incredibly impressed and slightly terrified. "
From one angle, this life-after-death power thing sounds cool, and you can't help but admire the iPhone 5s for it. But, on the other hand, the news is bound to make some people nervous about the level of power and influence Apple has over its customers that even when their phone is seemingly a lump of metal and plastic with no electricity, it still manages to record their movements.
According to Apple's official description, the iPhone 5s has a 1570 mAh battery that provides 10 hours of talk time and 250 hours of standby time, which is just normal for a high-end smartphone.
Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S5 has an "ultra power-saving mode" that can make the last 10 per cent of its battery last for up to 24 hours, so if this thing would've happened with that phone, we'd have understood. But even then, four days is a lot longer than 24 hours, and the iPhone 5s wasn't marketed with any such features.
Rumor has it that unexplained power that the said Redditor's phone utilised to stay functional didn't come from the battery itself but from the M7 motion co-processor that only the 5s has it so far. However, it is all speculation at this point, and until some expert physically examines the gadget in question, nothing can be said with certainty.
