Dear Facebook Developers,
Ignorance is Bliss. We were all a lot happier ignoring and being ignored without having to announce it on a loudspeaker.
Facebook has been spewing updates and upgrades at us since its inception. Indeed, the restless developers at Facebook at times seem compelled to introduce news changes which more often than not, are more detrimental than they are helpful.
Case in point of such an overkill is Facebook’s dangerous“Seen” on Facebook Messages and IMs. As we all know, “Seen” is a feature which notifies fellow Facebook users that their message has indeed been read.
While this argument may seem spurious or superficial even, it truly is a dangerous feature. Because of Seen, one feels an overwhelming need to immediately respond to friends and family who have written a message for fear that they may take offence to your lax attitude in responding. Let us not forget that sinking feeling when we try to strike a conversation with a love interest or friend only to realize our attempts were futile and misguided.
You can still come out unscathed by not replying to a friend. But Lord help you when all hell breaks loose if your other-half spots their message as “Seen” and for some reason, you don’t reply.
Whatsapp recently introduced a feature whereby users can disable their “Last Seen”. Now that Facebook owns Whatsapp, perhaps they should introduce the option to disable seen before it’s too little too late and relationships reach a bitter end.
In this day and age of digital advancement, it’s ridiculous that the only way to avoid being “Seen” is by simply not opening messages in your Inbox.
Do you think Facebook needs to roll out - or rather retract this feature?
