Instagram isn't just about applying digital photo filters to user images anymore. The photo and video-centric social media service has just added a bunch of new editing options that will hand unprecedented creative freedom to its user base of 150 million plus.
The Facebook-owned network on Tuesday unveiled 10 new editing tools, such as contrast, brightness and saturation. It also added greater customizations to its existing assortment of filters that would allow users to increase or decrease the intensity of the effects.
"All of us [at Instagram] are kind of photo geeks, but we're trying to bridge the gap between being a photo geek and the rest of the world," Instagram's director of product Peter Deng told Mashable.com. "Instagram's always been about taking these tools that were previously inaccessible ... and making them accessible for free for everyone that uses Instagram."
Instagram engineers have spent the last six months developing these new options, which include features such as adjust, brightness, contrast, warmth, saturation, highlights, shadows, vignette, sharpen and filter strength. Moreover, it's just the first of several batches that people running the show are cooking.
While the company is extremely popular among casual photo enthusiasts, it wasn't really of any professional use to seasoned image editors due to its lack of options, and thus, creative freedom. Thanks to these latest updates though, it might just be able to extend itself to those who use special software to tweak and play around with their photos.
