A new Twitter trend "#LiesToldByFemales" aimed at poking fun at women emerged on Tuesday, and after some initial entertainment, ended up hitting a raw nerve.
"The topic is..#LiesToldByFemales ?????? Lets go!" was the tweet that sparked the trend off, and it gained so much traction that more than 6,000 people had contributed to it in just two hours. That was just the start as by the end, it inspired a massive 100,000 tweets.
As expected, men were the dominant contributors to the trend, rushing in from all directions to share their rather hilarious grumblings about the opposite sex. The trick here was to mention things that women say when they feel a certain way about a certain thing but tell a completely different story.
Some of the funniest tweets that got posted are:
#LiesToldByFemales He was just a guy I used to hang out with— Guy A Hayward (@GuyAHayward) March 7, 2014
#LiesToldByFemales. You met your ex for coffee? No, I'm not jealous.— frwygirl (@frwygirl) March 7, 2014
"I love you" "I dont want you to change" "I'm fine" #LiesToldByFemales— Ben Westwood (@BenMWestwood) March 7, 2014
#LiesToldByFemales "I'll be ready in a minute!"— spunsir (@tealsmarket) March 7, 2014
While they let them have their fun for a while, soon the women came alive and defended themselves with a counter-trend "#LiesToldByMales." However, it wasn't as successful and died down soon.
Of course, some misogynistic content had also gotten posted in the original trend, and to answer them, in came the brigade of feminists.
