Samsung Unveils Huge Galaxy Player 5.8Size really does matter to Samsung, which today announced the release of the Galaxy Player 5.8, with the largest-yet display screen of any of its mobile counterparts.

The company's newest Player hit South Korea with a 5.8-inch, 960-by-540-pixel LCD screen, which is larger than its predecessors, the Galaxy Player 3.6, 4, 4.2, and 5.0. The newest Player also comes equipped with front-facing speakers, 1GB RAM, the choice of 16GB or 32GB of storage, as well as pre-installed educational content.

Running on Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the device's 2,500mAh battery compensates for its low display resolution, compared to the Galaxy S III smartphone's 4.8-inch, 1280-by-720-pixel Super AMOLED HD screen.

The Verge questioned the new device, asking why, "with such a large screen on a media-focused device, could Samsung really not have sprung for an HD panel?"

The new portable media player also comes equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, a microSD card, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and GPS support.

Pricing has not been released.

Samsung Electronics today also announced its new 1:1 ratio LED square and transparent displays, which are intended for promotional displays in retail, commercial, and public locations.

Businesses can turn their storefront displays into unique video walls, stacking the LED squares in what Samsung calls "unlimited configurations" to best advertise products. Up to 100 blocks can be used to showcase a digital loop, or to build a mosaic or shaped displays.

Meanwhile, Samsung's 22-inch transparent display box lets merchants control images and animations while passers-by view the product through a thin LCD panel in the front, surrounded by three sides of protective tempered glass.
