The advent of social media and the way it has revolutionized in recent times has played a pivotal role in bringing companies as well as customers together. Something which has its pros and cons. However, when Clayton Hove tweet a rather wry comment on his timeline about Smart Car, he never expected to receive such a dry, dedicated and obviously witty response. Hove tweeted to his more than 4,000 followers: Saw a bird had crapped on a Smart Car. Totaled it.'

Obviously, the comment was intended to be a throwaway remark, but much to Hove’s bad luck Smart Car went to every possible extent and limit to prove him wrong. They actually went to the extent of finding out the number of pigeons it would take to ‘total’ a Smart Car. The team finally ended with a figure of 4.5 million.

The entire effort might sound quite exaggerated for many, but it is definitely an ingenious piece of social marketing. Smart Car’s social marketing team were able to put together a comparison of different animal ‘craps’ along with asterisk and footnotes so that everyone is able to understand the quantity of poops they are dealing with.
Hove, however, was astounded and happy at the response he got. Finally, he had no other option than to admit his defeat by tweeting: ‘Outsmarted by Smart Car. Best. Social media response. Ever'.
