Fast food chain Arby’s is obligated to feature business partner Pepsi in at least two television advertisements annually.
However, Arby’s forgot all about its soda supplier this year while promoting its new tag-line, “We have the meats.”
When Pepsi sent a friendly reminder to Arby’s in October, the sandwich-makers revealed they had already prepared their end-of-the-year spot – much to their associate’s dismay and disappointment.
Upon realizing their mistake, Arby’s chief marketing officer and brand president Rob Lynch turned to the team at Fallon, a Minneapolis-based ad firm, and eventually came up with the cleverest, most brilliant apology ever.
They made an entire 30-second commercial featuring nothing but a chilled glass of Pepsi and a voiceover by actor Ving Rhames.
"We love you, Pepsi," notes the clip's YouTube summary. "You're like a meat to us."
Oh, and Pepsi absolutely loves the new ad.
“We applaud Arby’s unconventional approach to marketing and when they came to us with this idea, we thought it would be a fun, creative way to highlight our partnership,” Roberto Rios, chief marketing officer for PepsiCo’s food service division told the Wall Street Journal in an emailed statement.
