How In The World Did Bloomingdale’s Think This Ad Was OK?

Bloomingdale’s might be people’s favorite go-to place when it comes to shopping, but one really creepy ad has landed the company in hot water.

With the holiday season fast approaching, stores and brands are busy promoting shopping and festivities to rake in dollars.

However, Bloomingdale’s new advertisement completely crosses the line in its attempt to appeal to customers.

The newspaper ad that set off a scorching round of criticism reads “Spike your best friend’s egg nog when they’re not looking,” featuring a man looking at a woman beside him while her head is turned the other way.

Needless to say, the advertisement is — even if inadvertently  encouraging date rape, and has prompted backlash on Twitter. Here are some of the responses from social media users:

Looking at the ad, we can only question the intent and wonder who actually approved of something like this. Who in the world thinks the drugging a friend, with the connotation of coercing said eggnog-swilling friend into sex, is a holly jolly holiday greeting? 

Only after the criticism gained momentum, Bloomingdale’s realized it was a mistake and tweeted an apology:

However, the question remains that for something this major, is a simple apology really enough?
