Stephen Colbert has been having an awesome month, and that month just got better after The Colbert Report debuted the “best segment ever” featuring Johnny Cummings: a gay mayor of Vicco Kentucky. The segment, titled “People Destroying America” covers a fascinating town in Kentucky that defies every stereotype of “salt of the Earth redneck yokels”.
Cummings is mayor of the town and is extremely popular. The feature focuses on a pro-gay-equality ordinance in Kentucky. The ordinance passed easily making Vicco Kentucky the smallest town in the country to pass such an ordinance.
Pretty much every member of the town supports Cummings and gay tolerance in general. That is, except for one cranky minister whose own ignorance directly conflicts with the sane, rational opinions of everyone else.
What makes this video so powerful is that it shows that the gay movement is working on a larger level. Gay rights is not simply spreading in major cities but also in small towns like Vicco Kentucky.
Further, this video promotes yet again the new form of gay acceptance called the “oh, OK” opinion. Most of the people asked about the gay ordinance in the town seem mostly uninterested in it. Yes, they are for it, but it hardly seems like they have much personal interest in it. This is a good thing.
