The video shows a man in a hoodie walking over to a car as if beckoned but his smile quickly vanishes as a drink is thrown in his face. The caption reads “Prank on a hobo” with two laughing face emojis.
The victim is longtime Las Cruces, New Mexico resident Tony Robles. He is not homeless but rather has very little. Robles was called over to the car for a cigarette but instead a glass of coke was violently tossed at his face.
The callous joke did not amuse the Las Cruces community and instead members rallied behind Robles.
"It's terrible. That's just not what Las Cruces is all about. We hope that we can find this person as soon as possible to do something like that, that's an assault really," Mayor Ken Miyagishima said.
The Las Cruces police are considering pressing charges against the attacker.
The local outrage over the video has been channeled into an outpouring of support for Robles. Residents often see Robles wandering the streets and have now reached out to the familiar face offering food, clothing, supplies and even friendship.
"This man you known is going to think about this for the rest of his life but he's going to remember the good that came out of it," local resident, Ronny Enriquez, said.
Kindness really does outweigh cruelty.
