Ryan Harder, who goes by the name Minnesotapolis on Reddit, has displayed his astonishing "before" and "after" images on Imgur. The older one shows the ravages of meth on Harder, essentially a shell of a man; the recent picture shows what can happen when someone gets clean for nearly a year.

Harder posted his images on Reddit, where it instantly attracted the attention of Internet users and landed him the support of thousands of fellow Redditors.

The photos come with a caption: “I quit meth almost a year ago. It’s crazy how much can change.” Many people commenting on his photo congratulated him as they shared similar experiences.

In his comments back to the Reddit users, he described himself as “a recovering meth addict with six felonies, all drug related.” Although not initially interested in meth, he tried it at the insistence of a friend. He gradually started taking an extremely concentrated form of crystallized methamphetamine, which is highly addictive. The influence of the drug made him broke, homeless and suicidal. His path to recovery began when police officers stopped him from jumping from a bridge and brought him to a psych ward.

He also explained the ravages his body went through from meth drug addiction, including hair loss and open sores.

“The reason my facial hair was so depleted was because I never ate, so my body lacked the nutrients to properly grow hair,” the ex-meth addict said. “[The wounds were] because I picked at my skin trying to pull out ingrown hairs and blackheads with a pair of tweezers. And when it would eventually scab over, I’d end up picking at them again.”

A regular attendant at Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, Harder says that he has been completely clean since April and his family is his “biggest motivation” for staying well away from drugs.
