The scariest, creepiest and biggest bug you’ve ever encountered has nothing on this guy.
The giant insect was discovered on Little Barrier Island in New Zealand, and it weighs as much as three mice – and is bigger than some birds! The giant weta was found by Mark Moffett, an insect enthusiast from Colorado who noticed the cricket-like bug crawling on a tree.
Despite Twitter and the rest of the web frightened and disgusted by the creepy crawler, pictures and video show Moffett holding the giant weta and even feeding it a carrot. So it doesn’t appear to be dangerous – but we sure wouldn’t want to discover it crawling on our shirt.
Many are speculating that it’s the largest insect in the world. So how did it get so large? Scientists say that the species has few predators to worry about on Little Barrier Island, so it’s been able to thrive and evolve. Don’t worry, though, the giant insect is only found in the remote island in New Zealand.
