Most of our parents have shared embarrassing photos of us as children on social media at one time or another, and we always hated them for it.
One woman from Austria took it a step further when she decided to sue her parents for posting pictures of her on Facebook.
The unnamed 18-year-old resorted to suing her parents after claiming that they have posted more than 500 images of her on Facebook, according to The Local.
She said that since 2009, her parents have been sharing embarrassing and intimate pictures from her childhood with their 700 Facebook friends.
“They knew no shame and no limit— and didn’t care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my cot — every stage was photographed and then made public. I’m tired of not being taken seriously by my parents,” the girl reportedly said.
Her requests for her parents to delete the photos have all been denied, which pushed her to sue them.
Her dad, however, said that because he took the photos, he has the right to publish them.
As extreme as this act is, her lawyer, Michael Rami, said that because they were posted without her consent, she actually has a good chance of winning the case. If it can be proven that the images shared violated her rights to a personal life, then her parents might lose the case.
If they lose, they could also be ordered to pay financial compensation for her pain and suffering, in addition to being liable for her legal costs.
The case is set to be heard in November.
If the girl wins this case, all parents may want to think twice about sharing an unflattering photo of their child on social media.
