Strangers Help Grieving Dad By Granting A Photoshop Request

July 16, 2014: The Internet can be a beautiful place sometimes.

A grieving father from Ohio, whose baby died last Thursday, posted a heart-breaking request on the Internet this week. The response he received will move you to tears.

Nathen Steffel asked users on Reddit to digitally alter a portrait (posted above) of his six-month-old daughter Sophia, who remained surrounded by medical tubes and equipment at the children’s hospital during her short life.

“My daughter recently passed away after a long battle in the children's hospital,” he wrote.

“Since she was in the hospital her whole life, we never were able to get a photo without all her tubes. Can someone remove the tubes from this photo?”

This is what people submitted as their contributions to his appeal:

Sophia was born on May 30. Her death was caused by complications from a liver tumor, Steffel wrote on Reddit.

“She was originally at Nationwide in Columbus and then she was moved to Cincinnati children's hospital. She had a hepatic hemangioma in her liver. She was on the waiting list for a liver transplant when she passed from complications involving the pressure on her abdomen due to the hemangioma. She was six weeks old,” he wrote.

Although he and his wife knew from the first ultrasound that something was wrong with the baby, they didn't realize how serious the situation was, he added.

“I showed my wife [the retouched images] and she teared up,” Steffel wrote.

Someone came up with this amazing sketch:

“I was overwhelmed with the response I got,” he told

“My wife and I were so grateful so many people took the time out of their own lives to either send a nice message of sympathy or an awesome drawing. They couldn't have made this father any happier,” he said.
