Just before a black bear attacked and killed him, images of the animal were taken by the hiker.

Just before a black bear attacked and killed him, New Jersey hiker Darsh Patel captured photos of the animal with his cell phone.

The 300-pound bear was shown on all fours in West Milford's Apshawa Preserve on September 21 as it approached the Rutgers University student.

He was fatally mauled and bitten during a hike with four others. The phone had puncture marks from the bear.

West Milford police and the state Environmental Protection Department said last month that the bear did not seem interested in food and exhibited "stalking type behavior."
